Perdue seeks to expand production, antibiotic reduction with acquisition of Niman Ranch
Financial details of the deal were not released.
The acquisition is set to finalized in the coming weeks said Julie DeYoung, Perdue spokesperson.
Perdue views the purchase as a way to continue its commitment to reducing the use of antibiotics in animal production.
Niman Ranch includes more than 700 independent family farmers and ranchers, spread across the US. It covers a line of pork, beef, lamb, cage-free eggs and smoked and cured meats. All products are sourced from animals raised without any antibiotics used in human medicine.
“We are seeing continued strong demand for natural, no antibiotics and sustainably-raised premium protein and as we looked to increase our Coleman business it made sense to add the Niman Ranch and [that company’s] capabilities.
Perdue brings resources and ways to help grow the Niman brand, while Niman brings expertise and experience that we can apply,” DeYoung told FeedNavigator.
It is not expected that Perdue will change in any way how Niman operates or sources product, she said.
The deal also includes the Prairie Grove Farms brand and SiouxPreme packing plants located in Sioux City and Sioux Center, Iowa.
The new facilities mark an expansion for Perdue, DeYoung said. Previously, the company did not have in-house pork processing capabilities and the asset was an “attractive” part of the acquisition.
