Evonik has just acquired the probiotics business of the Spanish feed ingredients company Norel.

The German chemical company said it wants to become known as a provider of additives for use in antibiotic-free livestock management and this acquistion is part of that strategy.

The deal sees Evonik acquiring Norel’s probiotics product portfolio, access to 20 markets including Europe, as well as the company’s production site in León in Spain.

The business is to be integrated into Evonik’s animal nutrition division.

The parties said no other details of the transaction will be disclosed.

Norel’s portfolio includes a range of probiotic products for application in poultry and pigs and in aquaculture.

And Evonik said it believes probiotics will be critical components of a line-up of possible alternatives to antibiotics and antibiotic growth promotors in animal husbandry.

"In particular, they play a key role in maintaining the gut health of animals. The full benefits of probiotics as well as their potential positive impact in other health areas, however, have not yet been fully exploited,” said the Essen headquartered company, when commenting briefly on the deal.
