Ajinomoto invests in lysine

Japanese seasoning producer Ajinomoto said on Monday that it is to double its Brazilian unit's annual production of amino acid-based Lysine for animal feed products by the end of 2004.
In an announcement, Ajinomoto said it would invest to boost Lysine output at the Valparaiso plant of its Brazil unit, Ajinomoto Biolatina Industria e Comercio Ltda. (Brazil), from 30,000 tons a year to 60,000 tons a year.
The move is in line with previously announced plans to boost output at the Ajinomoto Animal Nutrition group's six overseas production bases from 200,000 tons a year at present to 300,000 tons a year in 2005. Production increases detailed earlier for Italy, the US and Thailand would bring group output to 240,000 tons a year, while today's announced increase in Brazil will lift the total to 270,000 tons a year.
Ajinomoto said the rise in its Brazilian production capacity would take place in two steps, with the first step slated to lift annual production to 48,000 tons by September 2003, at a cost of Y1.9 billion.
