UK supermarket to open own farm

Morrisons supermarket is set to open a 700 acre farm to research farming efficiency and sustainability in Scotland – and is seeking another site in England.

The farm, located at Dumfries House in East Ayreshire, will be a joint venture with the The Great Steward of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust. It will operate in partnership with the Scottish Agricultural College and has the support of the National Farmers Union Scotland.

“Morrisons Farm at Dumfries House will be farming to a statement of principles that delivers efficiency and environmental sustainability and we will also be seeking to establish a similar venture in south east England to further apply farm research to benefit the long-term competitiveness of British farming.”

Research will focus on animal feeding, housing and welfare and the first livestock will arrive later this year – Shorthorn and Angus cattle. The farm will also rear traditional sheep breeds, and some arable crops will be grown for feed.
