Mycotoxin measures
On the 1 March, UK officials rejected shelled groundnuts from Brazil at the border on the basis of their aflatoxin contamination level.
Meanwhile, on the 22 and 26 February Norway notified the EU authorities through RASFF that it had seized containments of corn from India due to the fact they were tainted with the same mycotoxin.
Out of the 3097 original notifications counted in RASFF in 2014, 309 concerned feed, about 10% of the total, but rising in number for the first time in several years.
The 2014 feed notifications were dominated by pathogenic micro-organisms, with mycotoxin contamination, although significantly less, coming in second in the rankings.
There were 618 EU border rejection notices from third countries for feed between 2008 and 2014, and 235 (38%) were for feed materials and pet food contaminated with aflatoxins, according to the publication Climate Change and Mycotoxins.
