Germany wants to grow aquaculture business
Aquaculture is the world's fastest growing food sector area, and Europe – and especially Germany – has a lot of potential for growth, concluded DLG, the organizers of EuroTier 2016.
Germany’s Fish Information Centre noted the country consumed 1.13m tons of fish and seafood in 2015, but currently needs to import 88% of its requirements - and that is one of the reasons, said DLG, that EuroTier now has exhibits and talks on new and established products related to aquaculture, inland fisheries and environmental engineering.
According to German aquaculture industry statistics, 20,900 tons of fish and 5,300 tons of shellfish were produced by 6,000 German aquaculture businesses in 2014.
The DLG also reported that the state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern, in Northern Germany, recently passed a resolution to strengthen aquaculture along with the publication of a position paper on its strategy to develop the sector in that region.
