Insects on the menu?
Several US start-up companies are turning to insect production as a way to develop a sustainable protein source for fish and poultry.
We caught with Mad Agriculture CEO Phil Taylor to talk about his work with black soldier fly larva raised on commercial food waste. More about his work here.
Georgia-based Grubbly Farms also are working to scale up production of black soldier flies. The company’s goal is to offer a fishmeal replacement for aquaculture, but, at the moment, it offers protein supplements for poultry production.
Bitwater Farms also is working with insects as a protein source, but the company is producing crickets. The group is in the process of designing modular insect growing units that would allow producers to raise and harvest their own feed supply. Details on their work here.
