Special Edition: Alternative Proteins
What does algae have to offer?
Growing freshwater microalgae may be one way to improve water quality, but it also offers possibilities as a protein-rich feed ingredient, says Sean Tibbetts, a researcher with the National Research Council of Canada.
His group has evaluated multiple strains of the freshwater plant for use with industrial bio-mitigation and as a feed ingredient. More details about his team’s work can be found here.
However, different strains of algae also have been evaluated as a potential aid to stemming climate change, said researchers with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. Using algae as a feed ingredient generates from protein without relying on land-based resources.
Here is more information on their research.
Michigan-based biotech firm Zivo Bioscience also has been working with algae development. But, their slightly difference focus has been on how to produce a high-protein feed ingredient that’s also cost effective. Details here.
