Leading researchers say dairy farmers should increasingly be focused on boosting calf productivity as the rate of growth of young calves is correlated with future milk output.

Academics and industry are investigating the composition of calf milk replacer, particularly in relation to fat inclusion rate, along with determining the optimum daily feeding levels for calf productivity.

There is also growing interest in the use of products such as probiotics to support a reduction in antibiotic usage in dairy calf production.
