Chemicals and ingredients distribution company, Brenntag, has announced a partnership with the Netherlands headquartered Avebe, a farmer cooperative producing potato starch and potato protein for food, animal nutrition and other applications.

Brenntag Specialties can now offer Avebe potato starch and protein products in Turkey, having, as a first step, signed an agreement to take over local distributor, Avebe Nişasta Sanayii ve Ticaret Limited Şirketi, a business that operates in strategic locations in that country, and that has blending facilities in Izmir on the Mediterranean coast.

The deal lays the foundation for further collaboration between both companies, further strengthens Brenntag’s position in a key market, and broadens its portfolio, strategic goals for the distributor, said Michael Friede, COO of Brenntag Specialties.

David Fousert, CEO of Avebe, said the tie-up with Brenntag would allow it to better serve its customers.

A cooperative of 2,300 arable farmers in the Netherlands and Germany, Avebe has 1,300 employees along with production sites in the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden. It has sales offices in the US, Europe, and Asia as well. The company supplies ingredients based on potato starch and protein.

Feed applications

Avebe produces wet potato fibers for use in feed applications. It also has a range of starch products targeted at feed inclusion, with each starch type and derivative having its specific binding, thickening, and stabilizing properties. Such products are suitable for pelleted, extruded, and semi-wet feeds, it claims, and part of its starch range is designed to improve process efficiency and pellet quality in aqua feed.

The firm supplies a slightly viscous liquid concentrate too, which is primarily used as a raw material for cattle feed, while a potato protein product is targeted at dry pet food inclusion. In addition, its portfolio includes ingredient options for vegetarian or vegan wet pet food.

Headquartered in Essen, Germany, Brenntag has more than 17,500 employees worldwide and operates a network of more than 600 sites in 72 countries. In 2022, it generated sales of around €19.4bn (US$21.1bn). Its animal nutrition product range includes additives and premixtures, vitamins and minerals, acidifiers and preservatives, protein and energy sources, and amino acids.
