Special edition: lowering feed's carbon footprint
Many uses for a tiny organism
Algae use in feed may provide several benefits for feed users, as the ingredient does not take much space to grow. A bill in the US Congress is seeking to support additional development of algae.
In the UK, scientists at Swansea University are working to find a way to generate a protein source from algae.
Researchers in Washington State and Canada have been exploring ways to generate larger amounts in less time. While, some are looking at ways to have the plant generate omega-3 fatty acids and others are using it to feed fish.
However, it can also play a role in improving wastewater and in nutrient recovery, says Clearas Waster Recovery. The group works to remove phosphorus and nitrogen from water streams, while providing a potential feed ingredient.
