EW Nutrition recently launched a product, containing phytogenic compounds, aimed at supporting poultry gut health.

“Pretect D is a combination of phytomolecules, including tannins and saponins, which have been shown to help birds maintain production performance even during challenging conditions. Pretect D is EW Nutrition’s answer to a long-standing customer need: mitigating poultry gut health issues,” said Madalina Diaconu, product manager for Pretect D.

The product can be used by feed millers or directly by poultry farmers.

It is being launched globally. “There are still a few countries where we are waiting for registration to be finalized,” Diaconu told us.

Research on the product, conducted around the globe, in research institutes and under commercial conditions, evidenced improved body weight and lower feed conversion rate, said EW Nutrition.

Challenged environments

The phytogenic combination has been designed to support the natural defenses of birds; trials indicated that Pretect D is effective even during Eimeria-related challenges, said the company representative.

“Diagnostic methods for Eimeria spp. are only employed when there is a clear suspicion of coccidiosis. Even in nonclinical cases of coccidiosis, the severity of the infection is generally estimated by the number of oocysts shed in the feces (OPG). We conducted these analyses and we saw the indirect effect of Pretect D on the Eimeria population.

“Eimeria is causing serious damage at gut level, from inflammation to oxidative stress. Adding a product that can improve the beneficial microbial population, the gut barrier function, and the immune response can be an effective solution and part of a coccidiosis control program,” Diaconu commented.

Pretect D has been developed to be used in combination with vaccines, ionophores and chemicals, as part of the shuttle or rotation program.

“The antioxidative effect that the product has shown makes Pretect D one of the promising tools that can be used in the existing shuttle/rotation program, to make them more effective,” added the product manager.

The product reduces a poultry farmer’s dependence on harsh anticoccidial or chemical coccidiostats while, at the same time, maintaining production performance, she said.

“With Pretect D, we take a step-by-step approach that is farm-specific, and we try to understand our customers’ needs and respond accordingly. This means that, depending on the product already used by the customer, Pretect D can be added at different stages/phases of production, or in the classic anticoccidial program that the customer has chosen to use.”
