Emission taxes?
In addition to efforts that researchers and companies have been making to improve sustainability or animal efficiency, there is another element that could be driving efforts to reduce feed’s carbon footprint – taxes and regulation.
In the US, California passed a state-wide plan calling for reductions in the amount of emissions produced by dairy cattle operations.
In Ireland, in 2017, a researcher in Ireland proposed a potential tax on the greenhouse gas emissions.
Additionally, some organizations have found themselves on the wrong side of sustainability efforts and face fines for ties to no longer supported practices.
